OJSC Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol is Ukraine’s largest plant with complete metal-making cycle. Main competitive advantages of Ilyich ISW’s products are foremost low prices along with high quality of output (the latter has been certified by numerous international certification centers). Secondly, the company enjoys auspicious geographical location. Thus, the ISW is a neighbor to seaports, where rolled metal is shipped to numerous consumers abroad.
Not for a single day did the company cease activities on technical and technological production upgrade.Tube manufacturing is among key business lines of the Works. Tubes produced out of Ilyich ISW-made skelp transport natural gas from northern deposits to Europe and Asia. Meanwhile, tubes directly manufactured at the ISW enjoy decent demand in Ukraine, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Baltic States, and well as in non-CIS countries. In terms of its technical features, rolled products of Ilyich ISW are as good as output of the company’s main competitors in tube manufacturing.
Tube production at the Works comprises the following subdivisions:
Tube-rolling workshop.
The workshop is equipped with modern facilities to manufacture oil tubes (casing and drilling pipes) of carbon and alloys steel, as well as tubes for further production of various-purpose balloon.
Balloon workshop.
It is the only one in Ukraine and the CIS’ largest workshop for medium-scale balloon manufacturing: 20-80l volume of carbon and alloy steel for different compressed gas with 150 to 630 bar operating pressure.
Tube electric welding workshop.
The workshop is among the most advanced ones in the world. It has two tube-welding units, which manufacture longitudinally welded tubes of 20 to 114 mm dia and 1 to 5 mm wall thickness (out of both ferrous and galvanized metals), as well as various sections. Tube quality is directly controlled in the course of technological flow via non-destructive control systems and devices.
3000 two-stand plate mill.
The workshop’s output embraces plates of low-pearlitic Nb and V steel with high strength and toughness indicators for tube manufacturing (products are made via regulation rolling schedule). The workshop has facilities for every testing of output, which has been certified by Lloyd’s Registers (England and Germany), ABS (the USA), as well as TUF (Germany).
High quality of the Works’ products has been confirmed by competent certification organizations
By TUF-Nord Center and Ukraine’s DonCEPT Center within UkrCEPRO system. The plant’s quality system has been certified pursuant to ISO 9001 international standard requirements. Conformance of the ISW’ output (over 160 steel grades) with present-day foreign standards has been proved by certifications organizations from abroad, such as Lloyd’s Register (London), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Marine Navigation Register (Russia), Germany’s Lloyd (Hamburg), Veritas Bureau (France), Veritas of Norway (DNV), as well as TUF Nord (Hamburg).
Ilyich ISW owns 31 certificates for medium and high strength ship steel, boiler steel, multiple skelps, bridge steel, as well as construction, carbon, and low-alloy steel (including high-strength grades), rolled metal for construction welded structures (which correspond to German Construction Principles), and electric welded tubes of 21.3-144 mm dia.
The plant continues production advance
The Work’s output is mostly certified in compliance with present-day world standards.
Nonetheless, the company keeps improving technological and technical lines in production.
To increase competitiveness, Ilyich ISW has elaborated and applied production reconstruction and upgrade program. Most of measures under the program were run in cooperation with leading companies from abroad.
Reconstruction is underway at broad-band continuous hot and cold rolling mills, which ensure production of high-quality low-pearlitic steel plate and skelp used in manufacturing of large-diameter welded tubes.
The company’s further development depends on improvement of steel quality through reconstruction of steel-welding complex.
Ilyich ISW has signed contract with Novokramatorsk Machine-Building Plant (NKMBP) to purchase equipment for band-reeling section retrofitting. As 1700 mill has been upgraded, it will now be possible to produce tight-rolled roped HR coils up to 20 tons. Austria’s FEST-ALPINE is a major supplier of equipment for steel-welding production upgrade.
With upgrade of converter manufacturing, the Works is now able to produce continuous-cast slabs of steel grades, which comply with Ukrainian and foreign standards. Besides, the lowest content of harmful impurities (sulphur and phosphor) and non-metallic inclusions in metal products is now ensured.
In addition, plans till 2010 foresee engineering of two slab continuous-cast machines in converter workshop, while oxygen block should be constructed till 2005. Modernization of out-of-furnace steel processing facilities should start in 2006. As the aforementioned measures are fulfilled, the plant would raise high-quality steel output.
By and large, production restructuring and upgrade program at Ilyich ISW would yield the following outcomes:
· lower raw stock and power consumption;
· launch of CR plate of superior surface finishing;
· commissioning of steel and skelp production for large-diameter welded tubes, which would comply with the American Petroleum Institute requirements; and
· increased competitiveness of rolled metal products on global market as a result of higher quality.

The Metal’s reference
Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol has been established in 1897. Throughout its more than a century history, the Works has time and again undergone fundamental reconstruction and expansion to finally become on the largest Ukrainian plants with complete metal-making cycle.
The Works is a major supplier steel plate for shipbuilding, it is also Ukraine’s only producer of CR galvanized plate and compressed gas car balloons. Manufacturing at the plant considers strategic targets to produce high-conversion output of structural alloy and low-alloy steels.
In 1993, the Works has been awarded with the Golden Globe international prize for competitive and high-quality products, as well as for weighty contribution into Ukraine’s economic development and integration into world economy.
