NONFERROUS METALLURGY OF UKRAINE

Nonferrous metallurgy of Ukraine is characterized with
diverse production, technological schemes, and processes, and is represented by 34
enterprises of different ownership types. Presently, nonferrous metallurgy comprises the
mineral-raw subindustry, mining subindustry, aluminum, copper, and titanium-magnesium
subindustries, hard-alloy subindustry, lead-zinc subindustry, carbon, powder, and rare
metals subindustries.

Mineral-raw and ore-mining subindustry

Ore-mining nonferrous metallurgical works were constructed
or fundamentally reconstructed after World War II. Nickel and mercury ores, titanium and
zirconium concentrates, and high-quality quartzites are extracted, dressed, and processed
at these enterprises.

Presently, there are four mining nonferrous metallurgical
works, namely Volnogorsk Mining and Metallurgical Works, Irshansk Ore Mining and
Concentrating Works, Nikitovka Mercury Works, and Pobuzhskoje Ferronickel Factory.

Aluminim subindustry

The aluminum subindustry comprises Nikolaev Alumina Plant,
Zaporozhye Aluminum Smelter, and enterprises engaged in production of secondary aluminum,
notably, JV Intersplav, JV Ukrgermet, JV Obimet, and Brovary Aluminum Construction
Structures Plant.

Zaporozhye Aluminum Smelter produces primary aluminum,
Al-based alloys, and wire rod. It is planned to arrange production of aluminum foil.

Copper subindustry

This subindustry is represented by Artyomovsk Nonferrous
Metal Working Plant, JV Donkavamet, and JV Ukrgermet.

Artyomovsk Nonferrous Metal Working Plant rolls copper and
copper-based alloys into sheets, bands, tubes, bars, and wire.

Titanium-magnesium subindustry

Zaporozhye Titanium-Magnesium Works manufactures titanium
sponge, titanium slag, titanium castings, and ferrotitanium.

Potassium-Magnesium Plant of Oriana company that was
commissioned back in 1969 manufactures commercial magnesium.

Lead-zinc subindustry

This subindustry is represented by Ukrzinc plant. The
enterprise was launched in 1930. In 1954 the plant started processing secondary lead-based
materials and manufacturing antimony-yellow lead.

Hard-alloy subindustry

This subindustry is represented by Svetlovodsk Works for
Hard Alloys and High-Melting-Point Materials, Toreztverdosplav, Svitcermet engineering
center for hard alloys, ALKON concern, special production-technological bureau Inos, and
INMA enterprise.

Svetlovodsk Works is an up-to-date specialized enterprise
engaged in manufacturing products from high-melting-point materials and hard alloys.

Toreztverdosplav is equipped according to the latest
standards. The range of its products embraces bars, iron-based powders for wear-resistant
coating, relite, overlaid electrodes, overlaid bands, wire, etc.

ALKON concern mainly manufactures hard alloy inserts for
high-pressure devices, hard alloy elements for drilling tools, hard alloy tools for metal
cutting and pressure treatment.

INMA specializes in production of tungsten-free and
tungsten-titanium hard alloys.

Carbon subindustry

Ukrgrafit is the manufacturer of principal electrode
products, such as carbon and graphite electrodes, blocks, anode paste, etc.

Uglecomposit was set up with aim to produce carbon-carbonic
materials and carbonic fabrics. The enterprise has the necessary equipment to manufacture
carbon-carbonic layer-reinforced composites in the form of plates and solids of
revolution; carbonic heat-insulation blocks; carbonic graphitized fabric, carbonic
carbonized fabric; assembled heating units and separate components on the basis of
materials applied in electric vacuum degassing furnaces.

Powder subindustry

Powders of various nonferrous metals and nonferrous
products are made in Zakarpatye Metallurgical Works, Zaporozhye Metallurgical Works of the
Titanium Institute, Toreztverdosplav Powder Metallurgical Plant, and Svetlovodsk Works for
Hard Alloys and High-Melting-Point Materials.

Rare metals subindustry

This industry is represented by Donetsk State
Chemical-Metallurgical Works engaged in production of zirconium metal (powder), hafnium,
and niobium.

Volnogorsk Mining and Metallurgical Works manufactures
hafnium, zirconium compounds, etc. Pridneprovye Chemical Plant makes zirconium, hafnium,
and a wide range of rare metal compounds.
